Gathering, but not hunting.

25 April 2012

Probably the healthiest thing I ate in New Orleans.

It may have escaped your notice, but I was in New Orleans last week (I know, I never mentioned it). When in New Orleans, one does many usually unhealthy things — drinks Hand Grenades on Bourbon (I don’t drink, so I skipped that), hangs out in smoky jazz clubs, and eats tons of awesome but unhealthy food. I did that last one, and I did it like it was going out of style. It’s OK, though — I planned to do that.

But when you reach a certain age — I keep saying I’m 34, but I’m really 33 — you have to work out just to stay in the shape you’re currently in. When you add a week straight of eating crawfish etoufee, raw oysters, shrimp po’ boys, prime rib, shrimp and grits, and the above-pictured beignet, you have a bit of a problem on your hands.

The wife and I pretty much walked everywhere while we were there, but (for me, anyway) it wasn’t enough to stem the tide. But as I mentioned, I planned for it. I knew I was going to eat like a horse while out of town, so I planned to do a vegan diet for at least a couple of weeks when I got back. You might remember I once did a liquid diet (not by choice) for a couple of months, so I figured this would be a breeze. I’m in day two now, and while it hasn’t been horrible, it’s been harder than I would have thought. I find myself wanting things I didn’t even eat before I started the diet — ice cream sundaes, donuts, and other things with loads of fat. I think it’s an extension of my problem with authority — if someone tells me I can’t have something, I rebel, even if that someone is me.

But it’s worth doing — I’m sticking with a whole foods, vegan diet if it kills me. I’m just lucky my wife has moves in the kitchen, or I would have been at the Whataburger drive-through at two in the morning already.

Are grits vegan? Because that could be a deal breaker.

Well, you know I’m always up far a snazzy vegan lunch!
