Why I don’t write vampire or zombie stuff.

2 August 2011

Every once in a while, someone will email or message me and say “hey, you should write a __________ story.” And that’s cool and everything — I interact with pretty much everyone who gets in touch with me — but I usually answer “Nah.”

The reason is pretty simple: I just don’t have any interest in writing that particular story. If I did, I’d already have started writing it. Sure, when I was younger, I might have taken that as a challenge. But these days? Nah. I’ve got plenty of my own stuff to work on.

However, I don’t mind at all when people contact me and say “I’ve got this idea for a story and you should write it,” because I get to say, “No, you should write it. It’s your idea, and your story. All I’d do is procrastinate and get in the way.”

Don’t orphan your ideas, folks. Do something with them. The end result will be much more satisfying than anything you outsource.
