The Music of the Future
It’s not a secret that I really, really dig music. Even when it doesn’t make its way directly into my work, it makes indirect appearances — all of the chapter titles in 47 Echo are punk songs.
So, I’m a guy who writes science-fiction that takes place in the future, and I’m a huge music fan — but I have no idea what the music of the future is going to sound like.
When I was 18 or so, I thought it was all going to be electronica in the future — house, drum-n-bass, trip-hop, ambient. Hey, it was 1996. Electronica was huge at the time.
Then, when 311 released their Transistor album, I thought it sounded like what a restaurant in the year 2020 might play for its customers. I don’t think time is going to prove me right there.
These days, I think loud, hardcore music is due for a revival in the next couple of years. At least, I hope it is… a lot of the popular indie stuff out these days makes me want to puncture my own eardrums.
What about you, folks? What’s your prediction? What is the music we’ll be listening to in 10, 20 years?
